10 Small Ways to Save the World

DON'T FEEL SMALL, YOU CAN DO GREAT THINGS TO SAVE THE WORLD.

Right now, there is a lot going on in the world that is troubling for many of us. In fact, so many aweful things are happening all around us that we may feel helpless. To name a few, as Oprah has already chided to us, women's rights are being taken away, books are being banned, history is being retold, the US Supreme Court is dangerously corrupt, the debt ceiling is bankrupting us, the climate is killing us, the LGBTQIA+ community is being wrongfully attacked, the Cold War is back, and children are getting gunned down by military rifles in the streets. Wow! That's a lot to handle, right? Yet, we still try to go about living our lives acting as if nothing is wrong. Obviously, all of this is a total strain on our psyches, whether you choose to realize that or not.

I have personally struggled with trying to maintain my focus on living a healthy and mentally stable life. I suspect many of you do as well. That struggle is not easy to deal with. Sometimes, it may even feel as if the weight of the world is so great, you want to just give up on your hopes, your dreams, and your aspirations, because the work is just too hard. Still, I'm here to encourage you to keep going. I know that your ultimate goal in life is to find happiness and joy. I know that you want to enter a state of being that is totally aligned with who you are and who you desire to be. I know that you want to live in truth and authenticity, but your struggle perhaps is carrying out actions in the world that make you feel as if you have a true impact. So many distractions are all around us. They keep vying for our attention. So, here goes. Let me put my coaching hat on. The following is a list of small actions that you can take to make a positive impact on the world. We can do them together.

  1. Practice kindness: Treat others with respect, empathy, and compassion. Small acts of kindness, such as offering a helping hand, listening to someone in need, or simply smiling, can brighten someone's day and create a ripple effect of positivity.

  2. Reduce, reuse, recycle: Be mindful of your consumption habits and strive to minimize waste. Recycle materials whenever possible, reuse items instead of buying new ones, and opt for eco-friendly alternatives.

  3. Conserve energy and water: Turn off lights when not in use, unplug electronic devices when fully charged, and use energy-efficient appliances. Be mindful of water usage by fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, and using water-saving devices.

  4. Volunteer your time: Find local charities, nonprofits, or community organizations that align with causes you care about and offer your time and skills to help. Whether it's tutoring, cleaning up local parks, or serving meals at a shelter, your efforts can make a difference.

  5. Support local businesses: Choose to shop at locally-owned businesses and farmers' markets. By doing so, you can contribute to the local economy, reduce transportation emissions, and foster a sense of community.
  6. Educate yourself and others: Stay informed about global issues, social injustices, and environmental challenges. Share your knowledge with others, engage in meaningful conversations, and encourage dialogue that promotes understanding and positive change.

  7. Practice sustainable transportation: Whenever possible, choose to walk, bike, carpool, or use public transportation instead of driving alone. By reducing the use of fossil fuels, you can help mitigate air pollution and decrease carbon emissions.

  8. Donate and support causes: Consider donating money, resources, or your expertise to organizations that address important social and environmental issues. Even small contributions can have a significant impact when combined with others.

  9. Plant trees and support green spaces: Trees play a vital role in purifying the air, providing habitat for wildlife, and mitigating climate change. Participate in tree-planting initiatives or support organizations dedicated to reforestation efforts.

  10. Be an advocate: Speak up for causes you believe in, whether it's through signing petitions, contacting elected officials, or engaging in peaceful activism. Use your voice to promote positive change and hold decision-makers accountable.

Remember, even small actions can collectively create a significant impact on the world. By leading by example and inspiring others, you can help create a better future for everyone.
