If You’re Not Planning Yourself, You’ll Always Miss the Big Picture
There’s a truth I repeat again and again—from coaching sessions to leadership conversations:
You have got to have a plan.
Not a vague idea.
Not a “we’ll figure it out.”
Not a hope.
A plan.
Because if you don’t plan yourself… you don’t just miss the big picture—
you become a part of someone else’s.
Success Without a Plan Is Just Luck in Disguise
Let me be real with you.
If you’ve ever hit a level of success without a plan… that wasn’t strategy.
That was chance.
And success built on chance?
- It’s messy
- It’s unstable
- And most importantly… it’s hard to maintain
People who stumble into success without planning often can’t sustain it. They weren’t built for it yet.
That’s why in my book, A SIMPLE Systems Engineering Guide for Success, I emphasize this principle:
Plan Your Success so you can handle your success.
Because when you plan, you prepare.
And when you prepare, you position yourself to keep what you build.
Success Tip #2 🎯
Success may be based on whims—but it should always be planned.
You can be inspired in a moment.
You can feel called to something bigger.
But inspiration without structure?
That’s where dreams go to die.
The Trap Most People Fall Into
Now here’s where it gets deeper.
Some people don’t plan at all.
Others?
They over-plan.
They get stuck in:
- Endless details
- Perfecting documents
- Thinking instead of executing
And now they’re buried in their own process.
Success Tip #3 ⚖️
Planning is powerful—but overplanning will trap you.
You don’t need perfection.
You need direction.
Because a plan that never gets executed…
is just procrastination wearing a suit.
The SIMPLE Structure: Plan Like a System
In the Success System V model I created, your life isn’t random—it’s engineered.
And your plan?
It needs structure.
Here’s the foundation I teach:
Your Success Plan Outline
- Objectives – What exactly are you building?
- Resources – What do you need to make it real?
- Schedule – When does it happen?
- Measurements – How do you track progress?
- Expected Outcomes – What does success look like when achieved?
This is how you zoom out and finally see the big picture.
Objectives: Where Most People Get It Wrong
Let’s talk about the most important part: Objectives.
Your objectives define your success.
Not society’s.
Not your family’s.
Not social media’s.
Yours.
But here’s the key—your objectives must be:
- Clear
- Specific
- Observable
A Strong Objective Sounds Like This:
To own an interior design business that partners with residential and commercial companies in Dallas–Fort Worth, providing contemporary interior design solutions.
To own an interior design business that partners with residential and commercial companies in Dallas–Fort Worth, providing contemporary interior design solutions.
You can see it.
You can measure it.
You can build toward it.
A Weak Objective Sounds Like This:
“I want to own a business that makes people happy.”
“I want to own a business that makes people happy.”
That’s not a plan.
That’s a wish.
Or this:
“I want to make more money.”
How much?
By doing what?
By when?
If you can’t define it… you can’t design it.
And if you can’t design it…
you will always miss the big picture.
Planning Yourself Is the Real Flex
Planning isn’t just about business.
It’s about you.
Your standards.
Your vision.
Your execution.
When you plan yourself:
- You stop reacting to life
- You start directing it
- You stop chasing opportunities
- You start creating them
And suddenly… everything aligns.
Zoom Out and Take Control
If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or like things aren’t clicking…
It’s not because you’re incapable.
It’s because you haven’t fully stepped into your role as the architect of your own system.
So here’s your move:
Pause.
Define.
Structure.
Execute.

Listen—if you’re not planning yourself, you’re volunteering to be part of someone else’s plan.
Planning? That’s not extra. That’s essential.
That’s how you go from moving… to aligning.
Plan it. Build it. Live it.
Because when you engineer your life with intention…
you don’t miss the big picture—
You become it. 💼💎”
